“Oh, is that today?”
Well, it was a beautiful day for outdoor football, as they say. So why not strap myself to a bike and enjoy the weather before settling down to watch the commercials?
I overslept my alarm (surprise), and various and sundry other personal crises intruded, so the trip was off to a late start. But what we lacked in punctuality, we more than made up for in fun.
The trip started and ended at Esther Short Park in Vancouver, WA. Downtown Vancouver, as strenuously as the Couverites would deny it, has a lot in common with Portland: walkable blocks, bike lanes, and plenty of stuff to do. Anyway, Mill Plain Road gets you to the rural Lower River Road pretty quickly, so you can go from downtown urban hipness to pleasant countryside in, like, twenty minutes.
Mount St. Helens was visible, as were a bunch of other geological features for which I don’t have names. From Vancouver Lake, you can jump on a smooth little multi-use trail that takes you through farm and ranch country. Resist the urge to talk to the cows!
Anyway, as the sun teased the horizon, it was time to head back, swinging by a convenience store on Fourth Plain for junk food to eat during the second half of the ‘Bowl.
